My first long ride on an electric bike

TessDrive editor Aries B. Espinosa, a lifelong cycling enthusiast and advocate, goes on his first long ride on an electric bike. This video documents his ride from his home in Las Pinas City in Metro Manila to the top of Antenna Hill in Binangonan, Rizal Province and back, for a two-way distance of nearly 80 km.

Aries attempts to ride his modified Paselec GS9-Plus e-bike all the way without recharging. On previous test runs, Aries could run for over 50 kms on a single charge, on pedal assist mode 5 (the strongest assist mode, which uses up the most battery energy). For this ride, he will need to manage his battery energy use and his own pedal power in order to extend his e-bike’s electric-assist capacity. There are only two rules here: Don’t use the throttle, and more importantly; have fun on the road.

Here are the details of Aries’ modified Paselec GS9-Plus e-bike:

  • Frame: Aluminum-alloy full-suspension with 26-inch tires
  • Motor: 1,000-watt motor, instead of the standard 750-watt.
  • Battery: 14.5Ah, 48V capacity lithium-ion. Charging time from 20% to 100% is around 7 or 8 hours. The battery and BMS are placed inside the frame.
  • Weight: 32 kilos (70 pounds)
  • Gearing and speed: Throttle and pedal-assist modes (1 to 5), 7-speed gear shifter, with a top speed of 45 kph.
  • Climb capacity: Up to 30 degree-incline, or 58% grade.
  • Modifications: Frame, electrical, motor, and battery mods are done at the shop of Harry Cabigas Dela Pena in Pasay City. Check out his other e-bike builds on his Facebook page Harry ng Pasay, or his personal account. Message him directly at 0946-5668484.
