News from the plant-based world: Week of May 12 to 18

Every week, the TessDrive team gathers interesting or significant news and developments from advocates and proponents of plant-based lifestyle and technologies, because we firmly believe that the best that our planet can offer, and the best that we can do for the planet, does not involve giving up the lives of our fellow non-human sentient companions.

Vegan takes silver in 2025 Wings For Life World Run

In a May 18 report by Liam Pritchett for Plant Based News (plantbasednews.org), leading Austrian track runner Andreas Vojta, a vegan, came in second in Wings For Life World Run earlier this month. Liam writes that the WFL World Run has a unique format without a predetermined distance or running time. Instead, participants of all abilities start at the same time and run until they are caught by the “Catcher Car”—either in person or digitally. The overall winners are the last to be caught, which means they run the furthest and fastest. Vojta’s silver run was 68.54km in 4 hours and 9 minutes. Vojta has been vegan since 2018 and regularly posts on social media about plant-based sweets with the hashtag #candycheck.

Sir David Attenborough’s 5 habits to reach 99

In a May 13 report by Charlotte Pointing for VegNews (vegnews.com), as the world-famous environmentalist just turned 99 last May 8, there may be more than just genetics at play with Sir David’s longevity. Charlotte’s article hints at 5 lifestyle traits that he shares with the long-lived residents of Blue Zones—5 regions around the world known for their high rates of healthy aging and exceptionally long lives. These lifestyle traits are: He doesn’t eat much meat; he has a strong sense of purpose, or what the Okinawans call “ikigai,” a reason for being; he eats small, plant-forward meals; he nurtures his mental and physical health by spending time in nature; and he maintains strong social and intergenerational connections.
