PIMS 2022 showcases record number of EVs and hybrids!

TessDrive visited the 8th Philippine International Motor Show at the World Trade Center Metro Manila in Pasay City, Philippines held from September 15 to 18, 2022, and we were greeted by a record number of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid cars. This is, indeed, a reflection of a rapidly evolving motoring landscape that needs to address the alarming environmental consequences brought on by climate change.

As more and more automakers commit to electrify their entire product rosters within 20 to 30 years, Philippine motoring is seeing the rollout of more EVs and hybrids.

Here were the EVs and hybrids on display at the PIMS 2022:

Hyundai Ioniq5

The Ioniq5 is the first EV built on Hyundai’s new dedicated BEV platform Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which enables faster charging, increased driving range, more interior space, and better handling

Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 crossover SUV has an estimated 440 km range, ultra-fast DC charging capability and an onboard power generator. Kia Philippines will launch the EV6 1st quarter 2023 with a price tag of less than P4 million.

BMW iX

The BMW iX premium SAV has a range of 600 km, can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in under five seconds, and can charge 120 km of range in 10 minutes. It will retail for P6.29 million.

Nissan Kicks e-Power

The self-charging Kicks e-Power is Nissan’s solution to range anxiety. An electric motor always drives the wheels, while the 1.2L 3-cylinder gasoline engine is used solely to charge the battery while running at optimal speeds

Nissan Leaf

The all-electric Nissan Leaf is the embodiment of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility, with sales of over 500,000 units since its introduction. It can go from 0 to 100 kph in just 7.9 seconds.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Plug-in Hybrid EV has 3 engines: A 156-hp 1.5-liter TCI turbocharged gasoline engine paired to 2 electric motors, one with a 74 hp output and another adding 95 hp.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has added one-pedal operation as well as extended EV driving range, with the new model able to drive solely in EV mode with minimal engine operation with an increased all-electric drive range of 87 km

Suzuki Ertiga Smart Hybrid

Suzuki’s Smart Hybrid system has an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and a dual-battery setup, including lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries.

Mazda M Hybrid

The new Mazda M Hybrid system uses regenerative braking technology to recover energy usually lost during braking to power the vehicle’s onboard electronics.

Toyota hybrids: Corolla Altis and Cross, Camry, and RAV4

With Toyota Motor Philippines leading the local market in hybrid models, Toyota and Lexus have sold 20 million electrified cars worldwide, an equivalent contribution to a global carbon emissions reduction of over 160 million metric tons
