ROLLS-BACK:  Rolls-Royce issues recall on Spectre EVs

The Rolls-Royce Spectre has been touted as the world’s first ultra-luxury electric super coupe. But this pioneering EV has hit a snag. Its British maker has issued a recall for the Spectre EV due to a potentially faulty ground cable.

Rolls-Royce stated in recall documents filed with the federal government and posted Monday (Jan 29) said: “The ground connection cable between the front electric motor and the vehicle chassis may contain adhesive residue which can increase electrical resistance and cause an insufficient ground.” It added that if the front motor short-circuits, that could also increase the chances of an injury for a technician working on the vehicle.

The 2024 Spectre electric coupes were made from Oct. 24 through Dec. 11, 2023. Green Car Reports wrote that the fix involves an inspection of the ground cable connection, with excess residue removed as necessary. It estimates that 90% of the recalled models have the flaw.

In extremely rare cases, the issue with the faulty ground cable in the Spectre could potentially result in a thermal event, wrote Carscoops. Thermal event is often the term associated with runaway fires that are extremely hot, fast to spread, and hard to put out. Carscoops wrote that “in this case, though, Rolls-Royce says that it isn’t aware of any such incidents.”

Green Car Reports wrote that Rolls-Royce delivered a record of more than 6,000 cars worldwide in 2023. While it couldn’t yet disclose how many Spectres have been made or delivered to date globally, 107 have arrived in the United States with less than a third of those delivered to customers, according to the brand.
