Small but unmissable: Daihatsu’s Midget X mini BEV concept

Daihatsu Motor Company Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp, presents a mini battery electric vehicle (BEV) that occupies that sweet spot in between a mini-car and a bicycle, where mobility options offer “more peace of mind than a bicycle, yet smaller than a mini vehicle.”

Displayed at the Daihatsu booth in the ongoing Japan Mobility Show 2025 at Tokyo Big Sight in Japan, this very un-threatening little car is called the Midget X, a reiteration of the first-generation Midget, a car, according to its creator, that’s “built from the perspective of everyday life that transformed people’s lives—into the future.”

This mini kei car “carries forward the spirit of invention from the first-generation Midget, which stayed close to and transformed people’s lives. It’s a ‘Daihatsumei’ for the future, reinventing everyone’s familiar mobility to be even more convenient and accessible precisely because it is small.”

Daihatsu explains that, as a new mobility solution, the Midget X offers the “perfect” size, considering these “critter comforts:” A 1+2 seat arrangement that brings you closer to your companion—be it parent and child or friends—and sparks conversation; a variety of deck configurations to suit the needs of the user, and; front-opening doors for easy entry and exit, despite its small size.

When the Midget becomes available here in this country (if it becomes available here), we have a name suggestion: “Minippines.”
