Valenzuela City, BYD Cars PH team up for largest EV police fleet

BYD Cars Philippines, in collaboration with ACMobility, is advancing Valenzuela City’s environmental goals after it signed a contract with the city to provide 41 BYD Dolphin electric vehicles (EVs). These units, to be supplied by BYD Greenfield, will be deployed to the city’s police force, making Valenzuela City the first local government unit (LGU) to have an EV police fleet and the largest one in the country.

This sustainable mobility initiative by the city will provide round-the-clock security coverage while supporting Valenzuela’s shift to cleaner technologies.  It also aligns with the city’s sustainability goals and complies with the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (Evida) and Republic Act No. 1285, which promote EV adoption in government operations.

“By eliminating the need for fuel and significantly reducing maintenance costs, the BYD Dolphin offers Valenzuela City the potential to save up to 70% of its fleet’s operational and maintenance budget over a 5-year period,” said Bob Palanca, BYD Cars Philippines managing director. “This, combined with its zero tailpipe emissions, makes the BYD Dolphin a financially and environmentally sound investment for the city.”

Strategic shift

Valenzuela City, home to thriving industries, is committed to sustainability through several key initiatives. The city operates a materials recovery facility, engages in composting, and runs a clean-and-green program that regularly maintains and monitors the streets. Building on these efforts, Valenzuela is taking a significant move toward further environmental responsibility with its new EVs.

As part of this ongoing commitment, Valenzuela is taking a significant step toward greener transportation by integrating the BYD Dolphin units into its police fleet. The shift to new and modern vehicles will significantly reduce the city’s reliance on fossil fuels, resulting in lower emissions and improved air quality, particularly in a region with considerable industrial activity.

“We are grateful to the progressive city of Valenzuela for choosing the BYD Dolphin for its police fleet. The city’s choice is a shining example of how local governments can fulfill their duties while promoting sustainability and being more considerate of the environment,” said Lovelyn Labrador, BYD Philippines deputy general manager for corporate services. “This partnership symbolizes a new way of thinking that many Filipinos and more communities nationwide can adopt as they deal with the daily challenges of mobility.”

EV chargers across the city

With the city now having the largest EV police fleet in the country, EV chargers will be installed in strategic spots in Valenzuela. ACMobility will deploy 20 7kW and two 22kW EV chargers across the city to ensure the seamless operation of the electrified police fleet.

“Starting with the transformation of our fleets, beginning with police cars, we set a powerful example for private companies, communities, and individuals to reconsider their own choices,” said Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian, Valenzuela City Mayor. “We recognize that our vision will not materialize overnight, but today, we take the wheel of change and drive towards the horizon of a cleaner future, where progress does not come at the expense of the environment.”
