Audi electrifies and modernizes iconic 1985 sports car

At this year’s Monterey Car Week that was themed “Electrification and the Future of Premium Mobility,” Audi, which continues its longstanding tradition of energizing (and now electrifying) automotive enthusiasts worldwide, showcased the modernized, electrified, and inspired iconic design of the 1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1, the S1 e-Tron Quattro Hoonitron.

Audi believes this model dispels doubts that an electrified car cannot be engaging and synonymous with modern performance. This modern interpretation of the original S1 Quattro features dual electric motors, all-wheel drive, a carbon fiber chassis, and incorporation of the full suite of safety standards as dictated by motorsports’ top governing body, the FIA.

With only one unit produced, this concept was developed specifically for American drift artist Ken Block. It will be featured in his next installment of the famous Gymkhana series, under “Electrikhana.” The modern interpretation, the S1 Hoonitron, serves as a nod to this significant period while remaining laser-focused on the commitment toward electrification.

At the Monterey Car Week, the German automaker also showcased its three sphere concept vehicles, the “Skysphere”, “Grandsphere”, and “Urbansphere”, all representing a glimpse of the brand’s ambitious and electrified vision for the future of mobility. (Story and photo courtesy of Audi)
