Can British heritage and Chinese tech win you over to MG?

With pump prices hovering near ₱80/liter for gasoline and well over P90/liter for diesel, and consumers navigating a crowded sea of new energy vehicles (NEVs), how does a car brand truly cut through the noise and pump price volatility in the Philippines?

Morris Garages (MG)—a brand that blends a storied British heritage with advanced Chinese engineering—argues that real appeal runs deeper than striking looks. For discerning Filipino motorists, MG Motor Philippines leans on its local track record: 7 years in the market, a stable spare parts pipeline, and a dependable after-sales network.

Speaking to TessDrive following the Aug. 27 “Multiply Greatness Tour 2026” at the Trinoma Activity Center, MG Motor Philippines president Wei Wei Zhang noted that value encompasses far more than an attractive sticker price.

Zhang: ‘We collaborate with top-tier global partners’

“Pricing is not always the first, most important thing,” Zhang explained. “First, we are very focused on quality and after-sales. Having operated for more than 7 years in the Philippines, we have established over 40 full-fledged 3S dealerships nationwide equipped with dedicated service bays and comprehensive parts inventories.”

Beyond after-sales, technology remains central to the brand’s long-term strategy.

“We collaborate with top-tier global partners,” Zhang said. “Our batteries come directly from CATL, the world’s leading manufacturer. On the driver-assist front, we currently equip vehicles with MG Pilot, an L2 semi-autonomous system. Looking ahead, we plan to bring L3 and even higher-level autonomous driving technology to the Philippines.”

UK design meets global engineering

Since SAIC Motor acquired MG, the company has paired traditional British aesthetic signatures with Chinese engineering scale and global talent.

“We maintain our primary design studio in the United Kingdom, while several chief designers working with us in China hail from Europe, bringing prior experience from brands like Volkswagen and Peugeot,” Zhang noted. “This allows us to respect MG’s classic heritage while integrating modern European design and fresh technology. It reflects our ‘Make Global, Make Great’ ethos: tapping international expertise to engineer cars for a global audience.”

Zhang emphasized that this lineage anchors every model: “The brand’s genes trace back to the United Kingdom, and our designers work within parameters that protect that identity. They balance creative innovation with core styling cues, ensuring every vehicle carries that MG signature alongside a contemporary stance.”

A powertrain for every driver

MG Philippines vice president Karl Magsuci pointed out that the brand’s competitive edge lies in offering an exhaustive range of propulsion options across key volume segments.

“We offer the complete powertrain spectrum,” Magsuci said. “We believe we are currently the only brand in the Philippines with models spanning gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full electric. We deliver these across high-volume market segments: Subcompact sedans, subcompact crossovers, and hatchbacks. That’s where local demand concentrates.”

Magsuci explained that this multiple-energy strategy reflects real-world market dynamics: “While interest in electrified mobility is growing, roughly 80% of nationwide sales remain internal combustion engines (ICEs). There is still a strong base that prefers the familiar feel of ICE platforms, and we intend to serve them.”

At the same time, the brand caters to motorists looking to lower their running costs without overhauling their daily routines.

Magsuci: ‘We believe we are the only brand in the Philippines with models spanning gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full electric.’

“MG’s roots stretch back over a century to 1924, so we understand traditional driving dynamics,” Magsuci added. “Yet we adapt quickly to market shifts. We rolled out our Hybrid+ powertrain—one of the country’s most advanced systems—specifically for buyers seeking notable fuel savings and responsive performance without changing how they refuel or drive day-to-day.”

The Trinoma event served as the kickoff for MG’s 2026 nationwide roadshow, showcasing its electrified catalog and hosting the Philippine premiere of the MG S5 EV. The all-electric compact SUV combines rear-wheel-drive dynamics with practical packaging, drawing 125 kW (170 PS) of peak power and 250 Nm of instant torque from its permanent magnet synchronous motor.
